Media invited to attend 2007 SemperComm Gala
Springfield, VA – May 4, 2007 - The 2007 SemperComm Gala, with the
theme “For Them,” will be Thursday, May 10, at the Crystal Gateway
Marriott in Arlington, VA. The Gala raises funds for the SemperComm
Foundation, a nonprofit charitable organization that provides
communication and entertainment equipment, software and services to
overseas remote U.S. military bases.
The entire event, which starts at 6 p.m. and is scheduled to end at
11 p.m., is comprised of a dinner, live and silent auction, awards
ceremony and mini-concert. Country singer Chely Wright will provide
entertainment for the event, and actress Karri Turner will emcee.
Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts Dana Gioia is
expected to attend as a special guest. Approximately 800 guests are
also expected to attend.
Awards will be presented to the annual high school art competition
winners at 5:45 p.m.; three of the four winners will be attending
the event, and most, including our overall winner from The Colony,
TX, have volunteered to donate their works to be part of the
evening’s silent auction to help raise funds for SemperComm’s
mission. Two students from the Washington, DC, area are winners and
will be attending, along with our overall winner from The Colony,
TX.
SemperComm Awards will be presented during the evening to one Navy,
one Army and two Marine Corps service members. Awards were chosen
from by a panel of retired military personnel from nominations
received from all service branches. Three of the four winners will
be receiving their SemperComm Awards in person, all having recently
returned from deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. The winners are
from Loveland, CO; Jacksonville, NC; Bradenton, FL; and Tucson, AZ.
SemperComm has confirmed the attendance of several members of
Congress, high-ranking military officials, major business leaders
(The Boeing Company, Northrop Grumman Corporation, Anheuser-Busch,
American Airlines, Rolls Royce Inc., General Dynamics) and a few
foreign ambassadors.
In addition, several event sponsors have purchased tickets for about
30-40 wounded military personnel who are being treated at the
National
Naval Medical Center and Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The
sponsors’ donated tickets are meant to give the service members a
memorable night out and to help uplift their spirits.
Members of the media are invited to attend and cover the event. A
mult-box and riser will be provided in the ballroom, and VIP
attendees will be available for interviews during a reception from
6-7:30 p.m. If your organization would like to send representatives
